Completion
A Completed building must fulfill all the following criteria:
Topped out structurally and architecturally
Fully clad
Open for business, or at least partially occupiable
Height
The level of the lowest, significant, open-air, pedestrian entrance to the architectural top of the building, including spires, but not including antennae, signage, flagpoles or other functional-technical equipment.
Floors
Includes all above-ground floors, including the ground floor itself, and significant mezzanine floors / major mechanical plant floors, unless they have a significantly smaller floor area than the major floors below. Mechanical penthouses or plant rooms above the general roof area are not counted.
Material
All-Steel
Both the main vertical/lateral structural elements and the floor spanning systems are constructed
from steel. Note that a building of steel construction with a floor system of concrete planks or
concrete slab on top of steel beams is still considered an “all-steel” structure as the concrete
elements are not acting as the primary structure.
All-Concrete
Both the main vertical/lateral structural elements and the floor spanning systems are constructed
from concrete which has been cast in place and utilizes steel reinforcement bars and/or steel
reinforced concrete which has been precast as individual components and assembled together
on-site.
All-Timber
Both the main vertical/lateral structural elements and the floor spanning systems are constructed
from timber. An all-timber structure may include the use of localized non-timber connections between
timber elements. Note that a building of timber construction with a floor system of concrete planks
or concrete slab on top of timber beams is still considered an “all-timber” structure as the
concrete elements are not acting as the primary structure.
Mixed-Structure
Utilizes distinct systems (e.g. all-steel, all-concrete, all-timber), one on top of the other. For
example, a Steel Over Concrete indicates an all-steel structural system located on top of an
all-concrete structural system, with the opposite true of Concrete Over Steel.
Composite
A combination of materials (e.g. steel, concrete, timber) are used together in the main structural
elements. Examples include buildings which utilize: steel columns with a floor system of reinforced
concrete beams; a steel frame system with a concrete core; concrete-encased steel columns;
concrete-filled steel tubes; etc. Where known, the CTBUH database breaks out the materials used
within a composite building’s primary structural elements.
Function
A single-function tall building is defined as one where 85 percent or more of its total height is dedicated to a single function.
A mixed-use tall building contains two or more functions, where each of the functions occupies a significant proportion of the tower’s total space. Support areas, such as car parks and mechanical plant space, do not constitute mixed-use functions. Functions are denoted on CTBUH “Tallest” lists in descending order (e.g., “hotel/office” indicates hotel function above office function).

The CTBUH recognizes a tall building as having 14 or more stories and standing more than 50 meters (165 feet) tall.
Jeanne Gang on the future of architectureDesigner of Aqua Tower, the St. Regis Chicago, and the Lincoln Park Nature Boardwalk, Jeanne Gang is one of the best-known contemporary architects in the world.(more)See all videos for this articleThe development of tall buildings in the late 18th century came as a result of the coincidence of several technological and social developments. These developments included the installation of the first safe passenger elevator (in the Haughwout Department Store, New York City) in 1857, the use of a cast-iron and wrought-iron framework to support the weight of upper floors, and the refinement of the Bessemer process, first used in the United States in the 1860s, which allowed for the major advance in skyscraper construction. As steel is stronger and lighter than iron, the use of a steel frame made possible the construction of truly tall buildings. Further refinements in the late 20th and early 21st centuries in engineering, materials, and other technologies allowed for even greater construction heights, resulting in buildings that far surpass 14 stories or more. The engineers of the Burj Khalifa, Dubai, for example, used a buttressed core, a kind of concrete spine that runs through an entire structure, to build the tallest building in the world. The list below offers an introduction to a few of the other tallest buildings in the world, many of which have been built in the 21st century in Asia and the Middle East, where construction costs tend to be lower than in other parts of the globe. rank building location year completed height* (meters) height* (feet) occupied floors 1 Burj Khalifa Dubai, United Arab Emirates 2010 828 2,717 163 2 Merdeka 118 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 2023 679 2,227 118 3 Shanghai Tower Shanghai, China 2015 632 2,073 128 4 Makkah Royal Clock Tower Mecca, Saudi Arabia 2012 601 1,972 120 5 Ping An Finance Center Shenzhen, China 2017 599 1,965 115 6 Lotte World Tower Seoul, South Korea 2017 555 1,819 123 7 One World Trade Center New York, New York, U.S. 2014 541 1,776 94 8 Guangzhou CTF Finance Centre Guangzhou, China 2016 530 1,739 111 9 Tianjin CTF Finance Centre Tianjin, China 2019 530 1,739 97 10 CITIC Tower Beijing, China 2018 528 1,731 109 11 Taipei 101 Taipei, Taiwan 2004 508 1,667 101 12 Shanghai World Financial Center Shanghai, China 2008 492 1,614 101 13 International Commerce Centre Hong Kong, China 2010 484 1,588 108 14 Wuhan Greenland Center Wuhan, China 2023 476 1,560 101 15 Central Park Tower New York, New York, U.S. 2020 472 1,550 98 16 Lakhta Center Saint Petersburg, Russia 2019 462 1,516 87 17 Vincom Landmark 81 Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam 2018 461 1,513 81 18 The Exchange 106 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 2019 454 1,488 95 19 Changsha IFS Tower T1 Changsha, China 2018 452 1,483 94 20 Petronas Tower 1 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 1998 452 1,483 88 21 Petronas Tower 2 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 1998 452 1,483 88 22 Suzhou IFS Suzhou, China 2019 450 1,476 95 23 Zifeng Tower Nanjing, China 2010 450 1,476 66 24 Wuhan Center Tower Wuhan, China 2019 443 1,454 88 25 Willis Tower Chicago, Illinois, U.S. 1974 442 1,451 108 *To the architectural top, as measured from the level of the lowest significant open-air pedestrian entrance to the topmost architectural feature of the building, including spires but not including antennas, signage, flag poles, or other functional or technical equipment. Why Robert Wadlow will be the tallest person ever, foreverBy Sanj AtwalPublished 21 October 2021ShareFacebookTwitterEmailWhatsappLinkedInPinterestRedditThe records for the world’s tallest people are perhaps the most iconic of all Guinness World Records titles. Whether it be the tallest woman living, tallest teenager living, or tallest bodybuilder, there’s something about them that fascinates people around the globe. However, among this pantheon of giants, there is one who stands head and shoulders above the rest.Robert Wadlow, the tallest man ever, was 8 ft 11 in (2.72 m) at his peak height. That’s taller than a grizzly bear standing on its hind legs. Born in Alton, Illinois, USA on 22 February 1918, Robert reached unprecedented heights from an early age.By the age of just six years old he was already 5 ft 7 in tall and by the end of the following year he had outgrown his father.Robert crossed the eight-foot mark at age 16, becoming the tallest teenager ever. Shortly after his 21st birthday, at a height of 8 ft 9 in, he was recognized without any doubt to be the tallest human ever measured. It’s highly unlikely that any human will ever reach such a size again. Let’s examine why. Please enable JavaScriptAt no point in history has a woman been considered the tallest human ever.In fact, only one woman in history has ever held the record for being the tallest person living.Zeng Jinlian (China, b. 26 June 1964, d. 13 February 1982) reached a staggering 8 ft 1 in (2.46 m). Surprisingly, all of her family members were under 5 ft 5 in. Zeng is the only woman to have ever exceeded the eight-foot mark. She stood over one foot taller than the current tallest woman living, Rumeysa Gelgi (Turkey).Meet Rumeysa Gelgi - the world's ta...Please enable JavaScriptWhilst Zeng was taller than virtually every man ever, she was still 10 inches short of Wadlow’s record height, showing just how unlikely it is for a woman to ever break his record. We can also discount tall people whose height is not caused by an underlying medical condition. So called ‘non-pathological giants’, such as former tallest man living Bao Xishun (China, 7 ft 9 in; 2.36 m), are simply blessed, or perhaps cursed, with ‘tall’ genes. These genes run strong in the Trapp family (USA), who together measure an average of 6 ft 8 in (203.29 cm), making them the tallest family in the world.FBTall twins also usually share this genetic trait. The tallest identical twins (female) Ann and Claire Recht (USA, b. 9 February 1988), were both measured and found to have a height of 6 ft 7 in (2.01 m).And yes, if you're wondering, tall people are likely to make tall babies. The longest baby was born to Canada's Anna Swann and her husband Martin Van Buren Bates of Kentucky, both of whom towered upwards of 7 ft 11 in. Their big baby measured 28 in (71.1 cm) from head to toe at birth.Genes can only take you so far though. The heights reached by our tallest ever record holders are usually caused by the overproduction of growth hormones, which are regulated by the brain's pituitary gland. It may be the size of a pea, but the pituitary gland has a big job to do. It secretes an increased amount of growth hormone during puberty, but if it malfunctions, it can release too much.YTSultan Kösen (Turkey, b. 10 December 1982) is currently the world's tallest man living at 8 ft 2.8 in (2.51 m). For the average person, the growing pains of puberty come to an end when chemical signals tell our bones to stop stretching. However, in Sultan’s case, his hormones kept on going and his bones continued growing. At 10 years old, Sultan experienced a sudden explosion in growth due to the development of a tumour on his pituitary gland.Sadly, it wasn't properly diagnosed until he was in his 20s and wasn’t removed until he was 28. In 2010, revolutionary gamma-knife surgery on the tumour finally halted Sultan's production of growth hormones and stopped the world’s tallest man from getting any taller.YTSo how did Robert Wadlow reach the heady heights of 8 ft 11 in (2.72 m) - a whole eight inches taller than Sultan?Wadlow’s pituitary gland was also compromised during his childhood, but not by a tumour. Rather, it was affected by a condition known as hypertrophy, which means it was much bigger than expected. His hypertrophic pituitary gland was diagnosed by doctors, but they advised the family to avoid any attempts at removing it surgically. At the time, the risk of death was simply too high.Robert made the most of his unique condition, becoming a nationwide superstar and travelling thousands of miles each year to make personal appearances. However, it was during one of these long promotional tours that Robert became seriously ill. In 1940, during a trip to Manistee, Michigan, Robert noticed something wrong with his leg. For a while he’d been wearing a metal brace to support his ankle and leg whilst walking, but due to a lack of feeling in his body’s extremities, he didn’t notice the brace rubbing against his skin. It quickly became infected, confining Robert to a hotel room where a makeshift hospital was set up around him.Despite blood transfusions, he eventually succumbed to the infection. Robert Wadlow sadly passed away on 15 July 1940, aged just 22 years old.Why Robert Wadlow's record will never be brokenIt's tragic to think that an infected ankle was a death sentence 80 years ago. With modern medicine, such minor issues can be easily treated today. And modern medicine is precisely why Robert Wadlow’s record will probably never be broken.Nowadays, we can slow or halt excessive growth and safely deal with the complications of gigantism long before anyone gets close to Wadlow's superlative stature. And as the world becomes ever more connected, it’s unlikely that any child growing up with a pituitary issue more extreme than Robert Wadlow’s will remain unnoticed and untreated by doctors.Fortunately, no one in the future will have to suffer in the same way as the tallest man ever; a gentle giant who took it all in his long stride.Header image: Getty (left), Shutterstock (right)ShareFacebookTwitterEmailWhatsappLinkedInPinterestRedditSubscribe to our mailing listSubscribeWe'll use the information you provide us to contact you via email about our relevant content, products and services. (Alton, Illinois)When27 June 1940The tallest man in medical history for whom there is irrefutable evidence is Robert Pershing Wadlow (USA) (born 6:30 a.m. at Alton, Illinois, USA on 22 February 1918), who when last measured on 27 June 1940, was found to be 2.72 m (8 ft 11.1 in) tall.***Robert died at 1:30 a.m. on 15 July 1940 in a hotel in Manistee, Michigan, as a result of a septic blister on his right ankle caused by a brace, which had been poorly fitted only a week earlier. He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Alton in a coffin measuring 3.28 m (10 ft 9 in) long, 81 cm (32 in) wide and 76 cm (30 in) deep.Robert's greatest recorded weight was 222.71 kg (35 st 1l b) on his 21st birthday and he weighed 199 kg (31 st 5 lb) at the time of his death. His shoe size was a huge 37AA (47 cm long), he had an arm span of 2.88 m (9ft 5.75 in), and his hands measured 32.4 cm (12.75 in) from the wrist to the tip of the middle finger.Robert's peak daily food consumption was 8000 calories - more than three times the amount recommended for average-sized males. At the age of nine, he was able to carry his father Harold F. Wadlow (d. September 1967) later Mayor of Alton, who stood 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in) and weighed 77 kg (170 lb), up the stairs of the family home. His last words were 'The doctor says I won't get home for the....celebrations' (a reference to his paternal grandparents golden wedding). For our 60th anniversary, we looked back over the years at the tallest men, from Robert Wadlow to Sultan Kosen (tallest living man at 8ft 3in).In the video below, Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief Craig Glenday explains how this category is one of our most iconic, featuring archive footage and interviews with medical experts and celebrities. We also talk to school children who give their take on the challenges faced with being the tallest man in the world.Read more: On This Day in 1940: The tallest man ever is measuredTALLEST PEOPLE OVER TIMEThe last 10 tallest people date back almost 100 years. The Never-Ending Race to Build the World’s Tallest Structure
From ancient Egypt to present-day Dubai, a close look at some of the buildings that held the height record

Ever since humans began building, they’ve been building up. Throughout the millennia, our constructions have reached higher and higher into the sky, spurred by various motivations: religion, democracy, nationalism, commerce and design, to name a few.
Ancient Egyptians built enormous pyramids to protect the mummified bodies of their pharaohs. Christians used Gothic engineering innovations like flying buttresses and vaulted arches to build cathedrals that stretched toward their heaven. Industrious Americans built the World Trade Center to bring international business to New York; when that center was struck down, they built an even taller replacement—a symbol of resilience.
Around the globe, many human-made structures have enjoyed, for a time, the distinction of the tallest building in the world. From over 4,500 years ago to the present, here is a timeline detailing the record holders, from Giza to Dubai.
The Great Pyramid

Giza, Egypt
Circa 2550 B.C. to A.D. 1311; 1548-1569; 1573-1625
Height: 455 feet (481.4 feet pre-erosion)
The Great Pyramid—also known as Khufu, after the Egyptian pharaoh it was built to entomb—is the largest of Giza’s pyramids. We know it as a sand-colored behemoth, but in its heyday, the pyramid was a shimmering white, due to an original limestone casing that eroded over time. Khufu enjoyed three reigns as the world’s tallest building, as rivals rose and collapsed during the medieval period and the Renaissance. During its unmatched first stint at the top, totaling almost four millennia, the only competitor that came close in height was the Lighthouse of Alexandria, which stood about 350 feet tall before it fell.
Lincoln Cathedral

Lincoln, England
1311-1548
Height: 525 feet*
This early Gothic spectacle took three centuries to build. After its central spire was raised, the cathedral ruled the skies from its hilltop perch in Lincolnshire. Watching over the church’s famous choir, complete with carvings of angels, is the locally-beloved “Lincoln Imp,” a horned grotesque carved into the top of a nearby pillar. The story goes that the imp, sent by the devil to cause mischief, was turned to stone by an avenging angel, never to leave the church. With the construction of the Lincoln Cathedral, the title of “world’s tallest building” entered an era of competing Christian churches. In 1548, after Lincoln’s spire fell in a nasty storm, St. Mary's Church in Stralsund, Germany, took the title, at 495 feet tall. Then, St. Mary’s spire collapsed, allowing a French church a turn in the top spot.
Cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg

1647-1874
Height: 465.9 feet
Of the cathedrals that took the height record after Lincoln, Strasbourg held the title the longest. Victor Hugo called it a “delicate marvel,” while Goethe likened it to a “sublimely towering, wide-spreading tree of God.” Through its long history, the cathedral has been damaged in multiple wars. Projectiles set its nave ablaze during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870; during World War I, two of its bells were removed for their metal; and during the Nazi occupation of World War II, Hitler’s army stole its stained-glass windows. In 1945, those windows were rediscovered in a German salt mine by the U.S. Army’s Monuments Men, a group of deployed art preservationists.
Wounded people were brought to Strasbourg Cathedral during the Franco-Prussian War.
Wellcome Collection
The height record moved back to Germany in 1874, with the completion of Hamburg’s 484-foot-tall St. Nicholas’ Church. In 1876, France’s Rouen Cathedral took the title, at 495 feet tall. And finally, in 1880, Germany’s 515-foot Cologne Cathedral became the last church to hold the height record.

Height: 555.4 feet
Putting an end to the long string of tallest buildings dedicated to God, the Washington Monument was erected to honor the United States’ first president. Because of funding difficulties that halted construction, the obelisk was built in two phases—and with three different marbles. The stones weathered differently, and visitors can still see the gentle contrast in their colors. Miraculously, no mortar was used in the construction of the monument. It stands supported only by the weight of its stones and the friction between them.Looking up at the Washington Monument, you can see a color change. Begun in 1848 with Maryland marble, construction paused in 1854 at the 152 foot level. When building resumed in 1880, a slightly different shade of Maryland marble was used to complete the impressive obelisk. pic.twitter.com/X3xiQpU45p— National Mall NPS (@NationalMallNPS) August 13, 2021
Eiffel Tower

Height: 1,024 feet*
Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel debuted his latticed design at the 1889 World’s Fair, originally calling it simply the “300-Meter Tower.” But its height is not exactly fixed: As its iron expands or contracts with changes in temperature, the tower grows a few inches each summer and shrinks in the winter. It has been painted 19 times, mostly by hand, to protect and preserve the metal’s integrity. The Eiffel wore coats of reddish brown, yellow and chestnut before donning its now-signature “Eiffel Tower brown” in 1968.Chrysler Building

1929-1931
Height: 1,046 feet
Automotive machinist and magnate Walter P. Chrysler had this Art Deco marvel’s destiny in mind from the beginning. He commissioned architect William Van Alen to design the world’s tallest building, and the Chrysler Building indeed occupied the top spot for more than a year. Decorated with gargoyles and chrome-nickel steel, the tower also hosted a Chrysler automobile showroom in the 1930s.Empire State Building

1931-1970
Height: 1,250 feet*
The Chrysler Building didn’t enjoy the top spot for long. By the time it debuted, ground had already been broken on the Empire State Building, which would surpass its Midtown neighbor after just 13 months of construction. The tower’s Art Deco lobby is a designated historic landmark, but most visitors come for the view from the top. Designated the nation’s top tourism attraction, the tower attracts four million visitors—and around 25 lightning strikes—every year.
World Trade Center

1970-1973
Height: 1,368 feet (the North Tower)
The World Trade Center’s two towers had a few names: One and Two; North and South; and, informally, David and Nelson, for the Rockefeller brothers who championed the behemoth development. Following in the industrious footsteps of their grandfather, John D. Rockefeller, David lobbied the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to build a World Trade Center, which would encourage international business in lower Manhattan and symbolize the United States’ leadership of global commerce. The Port Authority took up the project, while Nelson, as governor of New York, signed the law that enabled its construction. By completion, the Twin Towers had dwarfed the Empire State Building by 100 feet.

Height: 1,450 feet
With the completion of the Willis Tower, the Windy City ended New York’s long reign as the world’s height capital. Built for department store giant Sears, Roebuck and Company, the building was originally known as the Sears Tower. On a fair-weather day, one can see four states from its famous skydeck: Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan and, of course, Illinois.

Height: 1,483 feet
Built to headquarter the Malaysian oil company Petronas, these twin towers are connected by a two-story-tall bridge at their 41st and 42nd floors. Stabilizing the buildings is a foundation stretching 400 feet below ground. The shape of each tower’s footprint is inspired by an eight-pointed star, a traditional Malaysian Islamic shape.

Height: 1,667 feet
The Taipei Financial Center debuted with a bang on New Year's Eve in 2004, conducting the first of its now-famous annual fireworks shows. To some, the tower’s design recalls a pagoda—a traditional East Asian tiered tower—but its architect actually based the building’s appearance on a bamboo stalk. Now known as Taipei 101, the tower boasts an indoor and outdoor observatory, a mall, and high-end restaurants. 2010-Present
Height: 2,717 feet
This “megatall” skyscraper—a classification for buildings over 1,968 feet tall—was raised in just six years, with construction costing $1.5 billion. As the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa also holds records for the highest observation deck, longest elevator shaft and more. The gleaming tower is 200 stories tall, but only 160 are habitable. The top 29 percent of its stature is “vanity height,” Interesting Engineering writes: floors filled with structural support, built to increase the height of the building. The giant’s accessible floors host a five-star hotel, offices, restaurants and residences designed by Giorgio Armani.
*Refers to the height at the time of construction.

In the 1990s Dubai, a city-state in the United

with a population of only about 1.4 million and no oil of its

CHINA AND HONG KONG
China, including Hong Kong, accounts for 30 of the 58
supertalls in our surve
y
.
The multiplication of supertalls and of
skyscrapers generally in Chinese cities is the direct result of
government policies of urbanization. From the 1980s, 340
million people – the equivalent population of the U.S. – moved
from farms to cities in the largest mass migration in human
histor
y
.
The Chinese government encouraged and invested in
new construction.
Beyond Hong Kong, which had long had a thriving skyscraper
market, the earliest centers of supertall development were the
financial district of Shanghai and the fast-growing cities of the
Pearl River Delta, Shenzhen and Guangzhou. Since 2007,
many second- and third-tier Chinese cities with populations of
four to twelve million such as Chongqing, Chengdu, Dalian,
Guiyang, Nanning, Nanjing,

ianjin, and

one or more major towers. Many projects stalled during
construction: Goldin Finance

T
ianjin topped out at 597

Chinese supertalls are most often mixed-use towers with
o

fices on the lower floors and residences and hotels above.
They are often simple, slender forms that taper toward the
top, where hotel floor plates are reduced in size and depth. In
headquarter o

Resources in Shenzhen, the topmost floors contain
spectacular event spaces with sweeping city views.
